Flame Retardant in Butter, "Contaminants in Food – Brominated Flame Retardants" in Molecular Nutrition and Food Research
Dear all,
There has been excellent press coverage of research from Arnie Schecter and his colleagues finding high levels of a flame retardant in butter.

Please see the abstract of the research below. Write us if you would like a copy of the entire article.
This is an example of how one toxic flame retardant is making its way into the food supply. Other organohalogens such as DDT are still in our food decades after being banned. Right now PBDE exposure comes primarily from emissions from furniture and other products in our homes. It is important to identify and responsibly dispose of such products containing toxic flame retardants so the chemicals don't. end up in our food. A couple years ago, an issue of "Molecular Nutrition and Food Research" was devoted to contamination of food by brominated flame retardants. Some excerpts are below.

And please remember you can register for the Feb 11, 2011 Flame Retardant Dilemma at UC Berkeley at http://greensciencepolicy.org/node/289 .
You can sign the San Antonio Statement on Brominated and Chlorinated Flame Retardants at at: http://greensciencepolicy.org/node/278. Currently 205 scientists and physicians from 30 countries have signed the statement.
